Kyle's story.

“Be nice,” Dwayne says, “after all, he’s your brother.” Kyle scowls, “No he’s not.” Dwayne sighs, “Listen, son,” “I’m not your son, stop saying that.” A look of hurt washes across Dwayne’s face and he lets the boy go, stepping back. “Please Kyle,” he begs. “I just want to do what’s best for you.” “Then leave me alone!” Kyle snaps back, “I don’t want anything to do with you.” He turns and walks out of the room, his face scrunched up, trying not to cry. He didn’t want to hate this family, but he had to. He never stayed in one place for long, why would this be any different?
“I don’t know what to do. He doesn’t have any family. We’ve already started the adoption process, but I don’t want to follow through with it unless he wants to stay here.” Dwayne sat in a chair across from his wife Charlotte. “What did you say to him?” She asks quietly. “I told him to be nice to Jim” he replies, “I said they were brothers.” “And I’m guessing he didn’t like that?” “Nope,” Dwayne shook his head, “especially when I called him son. I mostly wanted to see what his reaction would be, I wasn’t expecting that. What do I do Charlotte?” She thought for a moment before speaking, “Well,” she said slowly, “I suppose you should just sit him down and talk to him. I don’t know if he’ll listen but to a foster kid getting adopted means the world. It means you’re wanted.” She says the last part quietly as if reliving a bad memory. Dwayne takes his wife’s hand. She smiles sadly at him. “It’ll be okay,” he says. “We will find a good home for this kid, just like we found one for you.”

Kyle grabs a shirt and stuffs it into his backpack without folding it. He continues to pack thinking over the conversation he had with Dwayne. He had looked so desperate. Why? It wasn’t like he loved Kyle. How could he? Kyle was just an inconvenience passing through his home. Sure, this was the longest he’d ever been with one family. Almost a year now, but that didn’t mean anything. It just meant they had longer to realize they didn’t want me. That’s how it always went, always. There was no point in hoping anymore.

Hope you like it!!
